International awareness campaign

ORR and RSSB both welcomed International Level Crossing Awareness Day held on June 22, taking place in 45 countries and co-ordinated by the International Union of Railways. For its part, Network Rail published UIC statistics of level crossing fatalities during 2009 in 13 countries. The highest death toll reported was 248 in the USA, the 126 killed in Argentina being a very poor result given the comparative size of the country's rail network. Australia has averaged 37 deaths over several years.
