In its consultation document, DfT explains that its aim is to have multimodal integrated smart ticketing schemes operating in all English conurbations by 2015, starting with smart ticketing infrastructure on all public transport. As well as smart media, 'competitively-priced integrated tickets' that are valid across operators and modes will be available. At the same time, increasing smart ticketing coverage on the National Rail network will 'facilitate' seamless door-to-door travel.
