Strathclyde Partnership for Transport announced last month that procurement of new rolling stock and signalling for the Glasgow Subway would begin before the end of 2011. 'Market-sounding discussions' have already taken place with suppliers to London Underground and New York City Transit, as well as to light rail networks in Manchester, Boston and Dallas. The 10 km circular route under Glasgow opened in 1896, and last underwent major modernisation in 1977-80 when it was shut down for the work. This time, SPT says it will keep the Subway operational while modernisation takes dace.
