One of Europe's safest railways

Last month saw the publication of a 2013 health and safety report by ORR as well as a 2012-13 safety performance report by RSSB, which together provide evidence of the continuation of the huge improvement in rail safety seen over recent decades. A graph produced by RSSB shows passenger and workforce fatality rates on the 10 largest national networks in the European Union over the five years from 2007 to 2011. The lowest death rates per billion train-km are 2-6 in Britain compared to 12-3 in Germany, 17-3 in France, 31-3 in Italy and 44-7 in Spain. The average across the 25 Ell railways was 23.9.
