Transport tor Greater Manchester has confirmed a £34m contract with rolling stock manufacturer Bombardier, covering the purchase of 16 new trams to provide extra capacity on the extended Metrolink network. Provided from the government's Local Growth Fund, it was initially anticipated that funding would be available for 12 vehi- cles, but the larger order has been made possible through a combination of favourable exchange rates and economies of scale. Combined with the recent order for 10 cars, this latest tranche means that the Metrolink fleet should reach a total of 120 vehicles by 2017.
