On April 28 Groupe Eurotunnel SA announced that it would be reducing track access charges for freight trains by up to 50% from June, hoping that this will lead to a doubling of the number of freight trains operated through the Channel Tunnel to reach 5 000 per year in 2018. This follows the European Commission commencing an infringement procedure in June 2013 to consider whether France and the UK had failed to ensure that EU regulations on track access were being applied to the Channel Tunnel.
