Work to lay 2 miles of track between the Crossrail portal at Plumstead and Abbey Wood station on the North Kent Line is now over 50°/o complete. According to Crossrail, this is 'the first section of dedicated Crossrail track to be installed anywhere along the route1. Undertaken by Balfour Beatty, Network Rail's principal contractor for this element of the Crossrail surface works programme, work has included realigning the North Kent Line and replacement of a footbridge over the railway. 'Completing this section of track on time is important because it means that Crossrail can get on with the job of fitting out the new tunnels', said NR Crossrail Programme Director Matthew Steele. 'Once fully open in 2018, the new tracks will link Abbey Wood to the rest of London like never before, providing local people with a dramatically improved rail service'. NR has also completed demolition of the former station building at Abbey Wood. Pending completion of the new station providing step-free access to all platforms, a temporary facility has been provided for Southeastern passengers since October 2014.
