NR orders fifth ballast cleaner

Network Rail announced on February 26 that it had ordered a fifth high-output ballast cleaning system, plus associated support plant, from Plasser ft Theurer for £50m. BCS5 is due to be delivered in 2016 and will be the first in the UK able to operate on routes electrified at 750 V DC, 'allowing the conductor rail to safely remain in place throughout the cleaning process', according to NR. In addition, the new ballast cleaner will offer reduced fuel consumption and emissions. It will incorporate measures to reduce workforce exposure to ballast dust, including mist-based suppression systems.
