NR BUYS FIFTH BALLAST CLEANER

Network rail has purchased a new £50 million ballast cleaning machine from Plasser&Theurer, the fifth such machine in its fleet. It is due to be delivered in 2016. The ballast cleaner, codenamed 'BCS5', offers reduced fuel consumption and emissions and incorporates measures to reduce workforce exposure to ballast dust. The new cleaner is also built for third rail operation, allowing the conductor rail to remain in place throughout the cleaning process.
