EU Valleys funding safe

European Union funding allocated to the electrification of the Cardiff Valley Lines will be protected should the work not be completed by the time of the UK's formal exit from the EU, Wales Office Minister Guto Bebb told the House of Commons on October 19. He was responding to former Conservative Welsh Secretary Cheryl Gillan in a debate on rail electrification. Gillan had noted that £738m had been ring-fenced for the electrification of the Valley Lines, adding that the scheme was not expected to be completed until at least 2022 or 2023. 'What assurances has the minister had that the £110m from the European Regional Development Fund will still be forthcoming for this project before the UK leaves the EU?' she asked.
