Progress with the introduction of smart ticketing has been 'far too slow outside Scotland and larger cities', according to the government's strategic vision for rail (pi). By the end of 2018, DfT intends that both ITSO-compliant smart-cards and barcode tickets will be accepted for travel on almost all of the National Rail network. Wider use of mobile phone-based ticketing is forecast in the medium term. In the longer term, DfT intends to explore 'options that don't require a physical check of tickets'.
