RMT has welcomed correspondence from Northern which, according to the union, offers to work out an agreement 'on the best method of train dispatch and staff safety competencies'. As holder of the replacement Northern franchise, Arriva is obliged to consider transferring the control of door operation to the driver on a percentage of its services. However, with so many unstaffed and ungated stations on its network, it was felt that the TOC had limited scope to remove the second member of staff on each train. Nevertheless, Northern is keen to improve revenue protection and changes to the duties of the second member of onboard staff were always likely.
