Industry insiders report that agreement was reached between DfT and Hitachi on January 19 for the diesel engines of Great Western Railway's Class 800 bi-mode IEP trainsets to operate at their full commercial power where electrification has not been commissioned. Hitachi Rail Europe Projects Director Andy Rogers had previously said that there was 'no requirement to change the rating of the engines' (RBI 524 p6). Each five-car Class 800 has three underfloor-mounted MTU Series 1600 R80L engines. These have a nominal commercial rating of 700 kW. However, to improve reliability and availability the engines are de-rated to 560 kW under the IEP contract.
