This paper briefl y reviews the essential stages of therntelecommunication networks that have developed, mainlyrnat the European level, before the discovery of electricityrnand the invention of the electric telegraph. In particular, itrnfocuses on the most widespread of these, the only one thatrnreally deserves the name of “telecommunication network,”rnthe one implemented by Claude Chappe in France betweenrnthe late 1700s and early 1800s.
