This issue presents a paper by Stefano Maddio andStefano Selleri, both of the University of Florence, on ErnstLecher (Vienna, Austria, June 1, 1856 – Vienna, Austria,July 19, 1926; Figure 1) and his main contribution toelectromagnetism. This was the technique for measuringand hence fi xing the wavelength of an oscillator. He useda spark generator in the beginning, but soon Lecher lines,so named in his honor, were used to tune audion-basedoscillators, such as the one shown in Figure 1. Indeed,Lecher lines were the key tuning mechanism in UHF fordecades. They could be found in every house in the tunersection of the TV sets up to the 1970s and beyond. Lecherlines are also still eff ectively used as an educational tool.
