When the very first methanol burning glowplug engines appeared, post WWII in the USA they were vying for popularity with the then commonplace petrol engine and their compression ignition or 'Diesel' counterparts here in the UK. This side of the Atlantic where once the petrol engine had reigned supreme, the appearance of Diesels marked a sea change for British Aeromodellers. They were only too glad to replace their bulky and unreliable spark ignition petrol engines with lightweight fuss free Diesels! The hobby was in the main, all about control line or 'U-control' models and free flight sport and duration. In this country alone from around the late forties or early nineteen fifties a comprehensive list of our Diesel engine manufacturers would fill the remainder of this article.
