The North American P-51 must be the most modelled scale aircraft ever especially in the now prevalent ARTF form. Most of these are of the 'D' version which was the most widely produced and most of the surviving full sized examples are of this variant. The story of how the fitting of the Rolls-Royce Merlin to the P-51 airframe transformed what was a good low-level fighter/attack aircraft in to arguably the best all round fighter aircraft of World War Two is famous, what isn't so well known is that the P-51B/C series were faster and could fly higher than the later 'D' model but the view to the rear was not good and the bubble canopied 'D' was the better combat aircraft.
