In memory of Liu Tungsheng (1917-2008), an assiduous trailblazer

On March 6, 2008, Professor Liu Tungsheng, my revered supervisor, forever left us, but left behind to us tremendous treasures. For over 60 years, he dedicated himself to the development of Chinese Quaternary Geology. His exceptional achievements in environmental study, especially his remarkable contribution to understanding paleoclimatic changes from Chinese loess, was widely recognized by many prestigious awards, among which are the Tyler Prize, China's Supreme State Science and Technology Award, and the EGU Alexander von Humboldt Medal (Fig. 1).
