Bulls Lodge Quarry, in Essex, has had a varied history; once a World War II airfield, it was later used for motor racing until 1955 when the Ford Motor Company began using the old airstrip for truck testing. The airstrip was finally dismantled by Pioneer Aggregates in the 1990s to access the valuable gravel reserves below, with Hanson taking over the site in 2000.
