Austria's corrugated board industry reported a slight increase in shipments in the first half of 2020. This was due to a growth in area terms in the first quarter of the year, in particular. However, the industry suffered a drop in sales, industry association Forum Wellpappe Austria reported. According to the association's statistics, the Austrian paper industry sold almost 521 million m~2 of corrugated board in the first half of 2020. The figure is 1 per cent higher than in the same period of the previous year. Sales for the reporting period stand at close to €277m, 6 per cent lower than the corresponding figure for the previous year. Over two thirds of all goods produced in Austria are packed in corrugated board. "During the coronavirus lockdown, member companies faced short-term spikes in orders especially from the food and the e-commerce sectors", the association explained. Despite strict hygiene and safety requirements, the Austrian corrugated board industry coped with the higher demand very well, Forum Wellpappe Austria noted.
