Public Involvement and Stormwater Plooution Control

A unique partnership in Tacoma, Washing- ton, among public orks staff, local businesses, the non-profit group Citizens for a Healthy Bay, and volunteers kicked off a creative program to clean up polluted stormwater runoff while educating the public with a hands-on activity. The endeavor is part of the city's efforts to comply with IMPDES Phase I requirements, which stipulate that cities of more than 100,000 must run programs for public education and participation related to stormwater pollution. Many cities with populations of 10,000 or more will also have to comply with similar requirements under NPDES Phase II, which will be enforced beginning in early 2003. The Grate Mate program addresses these public education requirements with an innovative approach to community stewardship.
