Encompassing four acres of land in the city of Worcester's Green Hill Park and formed around the perimeter of a small and scenic water body known as Duck Pond, the memorial includes three important spaces that have been designated the "Place of Names," "Place of Flags," and "Place of Words." As you enter the memorial through a fieldstone and wooden arbor planted with climbing hydrangea, your first view is across Duck Pond to the massive granite piers at the Place of Names in the distance. Here, engraved on one of the faces of six granite columns, appear the names of every Massachusetts resident lost in the war. Looking immediately to the right upon entering is the Place of Flags, an area of public gathering and ceremony. Looking to the left is the Place of Words. Here, engraved on the faces of four enormous granite columns, excerpts of letters written to loved ones at home present moving accounts of life during the war. Eventually, the author of each letter would perish.
