Perhaps the most important factor in preparing for herbicide application is reading product labels. Herbicide labels contain information that serves as a guide to safe, proper, and effective product handling and use. Labels must be carefully read and thoroughly understood before mixing or applying products. Pay close attention to the following parts of a label: 1. Active Ingredients―Lists the name and percentage of each active ingredient, which controls the pest. 2. Inert (other) ingredients―Details the percentage of ingredients that do not actively control the pests. 3. Manufacturer―Provides name, address, and sometimes phone number or URL of product manufacturers or distributors. 4. Net Weight/Net Contents―Identifies how much product is in the container. 5. EPA Registration Number―Shows the product has been reviewed by the EPA, and in turn, the EPA determined the product will perform its intended function without unreasonable adverse effects to humans or the environment when applied according to label directions.
