Public sector continues to embrace design-build

In a state known for its sudden seismic shifts and occasionally unorthodox politics, recent procurement legislation in California seems to be tilting the local landscape toward greater use of design-build project delivery in public works. Similar measures in dozens of other states either have been passed into law by local legislatures, or are still awaiting votes later this summer. "Already this year, there's a record number of initiatives across the country that are under consideration," says Walker Lee Evey, the president of the Design-Build Institute of America, Washington, D.C. As of June 16, 158 bills enabling at least some use of design-build on public works projects had been introduced in 30 states. So far, 33 of the bills have been passed.
