Over the past 10 years, my agency, the Indianapolis Fire Department, has evolved considerably, and that evolution continues as we seek success. Perhaps one of the greatest gems of the evolution was realizing that success is a journey and not a destination. We are, and should always be, striving to do more, do better and be our best. This article looks at my agency's experience in training newly hired telecommunicators. You know the type; they're like sponges. Initially, our approach was to simply use the "best" telecommunicator as the communications training officer (CTO), thinking that the best telecommunicator would have the greatest chance of showing a trainee how it's done.
