In this month's column, readers of the Journal will meet old and new photography words. The column will vary at least slightly month by month. 1. Interpolation - Interpolation (sometimes called resampling) is an imaging method to increase (or decrease) the number of pixels in a digital image. Some digital cameras use interpolation to produce a larger image than the sensor captured or to create digital zoom. Virtually all image editing software supports one or more methods of interpolation. How smoothly images are enlarged without introducing "jaggies" (see below) depends on the sophistication of the algorithm. Nearest Neighbor, Bilinear and Bicubic are various algorithms that are commonly available. Bicubic, considered the most accurate, is the most used by cameras and image editing software.
