In this month's column, readers of the Journal will meet old and new photography words. The column will vary at least slightly month by month. 1. Printer Resolution - In ink jet prints the number of dots per inch (dpi) the printer prints when printing an image. 1440 dpi is a common printer resolution. 2. Gamma - Each pixel in a digital image has a certain level of brightness ranging from black (0) to white (1). These pixel values serve as the input for your computer monitor. Due to technical limitations monitors output these values in a nonlinear way. Software and/ or hardware calibration ensures that the monitor outputs the image based on a predetermined gamma curve, typically 2.2 for Windows, which is approximately the inverse of the response of human vision.
