British Land's Simon Carter on putting sustainability first

When British Land unveiled its full-year results last month, news of the completion of its 2020 sustainability programme and launch of its 2030 strategy was overshadowed by its £1.1bn pre-tax loss. It won't be next week when it publishes its annual report. Ahead of the 23 June publication, chief financial officer Simon Carter explains why ESG has become so central to British Land's thinking and reveals why it has decided to pursue a more streamlined strategy than in 2010. One of the big talking points last week at Property Weeks virtual event, 'Climate Crisis Challenge Crisis: Net Zero - the Art of the Possible', was the impact of Covid-19 on the ESG agenda, Carter is cautiously optimistic that it will not be derailed as it was in 2008.
