Ashley supersizes

Mike Ashley is attempting to seize a larger share of the sports retail market, by going head to head with Decathlon with plans for huge out-of-town Sports Direct stores. After scooping up 20 stores from the collapse of rival JJB Sports last week, Sports Direct is launching a nationwide "superstore" format of more than double the size of its existing shops. Sports Direct is looking for stores of 20,000-40,000 sq ft in the UK's largest towns and cities, and this week placed under offer the first in the trial: a 31,000 sq ft former Focus unit owned by RREEF and let by Morgan Williams at Avonmouth, Bristol.
