Fracking is the process of extracting gas from shale using directional drilling and hydraulic fracturing - pumping water, sand and chemicals deep into the ground at high pressure to create fractures. It has been in the news in recent weeks as fracking is a new and controversial process to extract hydrocarbons. Concerns have been raised over the environmental implications of widespread fracking - for example, earthquakes, water consumption, water poisoning and greenhouse gas emissions. Reports from Durham University, the Department of Energy and Climate Change, the Royal Society and the Academy of Engineering, among others, suggest that the environmental impact of fracking is limited.
