Poll: gas tax hike ok - maybe americans are willing to pay higher gas taxes if the proceeds are used to fund specific transportation improvements, according to a recent survey by the Mineta Transportation Institute. For example, only 31 percent of respondents supported a gas-tax increase for general transportation improvements. But, 50 percent or more supported gas-tax increases that would pay for specific purposes, such as improving road maintenance (71 percent), safety (64 percent), or reducing local air pollution (52 percent). Also, 66 percent agreed that gas-tax revenue should help pay for public transit.
