In 2017, major U.S. container ports logged five of the seven busiest months for imports on record. That boost likely drove up the ports' total container volume last year by 6.4 percent compared with 2016's level, according to the Global Port Tracker report released last month by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates. The report predicted that 2017 container volume would reach 20 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), which would top the previous annual record of 18.8 million TEUs set in 2016. However, Global Port Tracker forecasted January 2018 volume at 1.67 million TEUs, which would represent a 0.5 percent decline on a year-over-year basis.
