ASTM Publishes Standard to Improve Safety of Portable Fuel Containers

ASTM International has published a standard designed to help make portable fuel containers safer. Developed by ASTM's F15 committee on consumer products, the new standard describes specifications and four test methods to determine the effectiveness, fuel flow resistance and mechanical and chemical durability of a flame mitigation device (FMD) installed in a portable gasoline fuel container.According to Portable Fuel Container Manufacturers Association (PFCMA), FMDs are designed to prevent the rare occurrence of the transmission of a flame into a container and then igniting flammable vapor inside the container. The FMD allows a container to safely and effectively function for the user and meet the other standards applicable to portable fuel containers.
