A1264.2-2001 Defines Slip Resistance, Provides Much-Needed Guidance on Reducing Injuries

American National Standard A1264.2-2001, "Standard for the Provision of Slip Resistance on Walking/Working Surfaces," is now available. ASSE is secretariat of the consensus standard, which was approved by ANSI on July 2,2001. This project was initiated after a "letter ballot" of the ANSI A1264 Committee approved such action. The group perceived a need to further define the term "slip resistance" and to establish accepted practices for providing reasonably safe walking/ working surfaces. A1264.2 formalizes a minimum consensus standard that would allow businesses and industry to advance the art of measuring slip resistance on walking/working surfaces, thereby enabling safer workplaces. The intent of this standard is to help work facilities reduce falls due to conditions that in some manner are manageable. At present, the standard is considered "state of the art," but the committee recognizes that revisions will be necessary as tribo-metric science progresses. However, these guidelines and recommendations are much-needed and the standard as written details the minimum performance requirements necessary for increased safety on walking/working surfaces.
