Groups Partner to Highlight Overlooked Driving Hazards

The Vision Council and the National Sleep Foundation have joined forces to educate drivers about two underrecognized hazards-poor vision and drowsy driving. A recent study indicated an increase in eyestrain, dry or tired eyes, fatigue and an inability to focus while driving at night. Another study found that 64% of drivers who work at least 30 hours per week report they have driven a vehicle while feeling drowsy in the past year, and 36% have actually fallen asleep at the wheel. The groups offer several tips for enhancing vision and preventing drowsy driving: 1. Get regular comprehensive eye exams from an eye doctor. Many serious eye diseases do not have noticeable symptoms. 2. Wear prescription eyewear and make sure that glasses are clean.
