Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) recently received a 1-year, $1 million award from Federal rnEmergency Management Agency to finish developing the final part of a fireground environment sensor monitoring (ESM) system designed to reduce firefighter fatalities and injuries. Once completed, the system will locate and track firefighters who are inside burning buildings, moni-tor their vital signs to warn of stress-related concerns and take floor-to-ceiling temperature readings of rooms to indi-cate potential flashovers.
