The June 2011 issue of Society Update, ASSE's member e-newsletter, included a poll asking members whether their train ing programs include off-the-job safety topics. To date, we have received 280 votes, with 211 people saying yes and 69 saying no. We also received these com ments from Mort Beckman, a professional member emeritus. Off-the-job safety is as important, if not more than, on-the-job safety. Safety is an attitude. It takes no rest, breaks or vacations. Safety is every moment of our lives, whether awake or sleeping, at work or at play, driving, boating, fishing, camping, hiking, watching TV, eating, dressing, having surgery, shopping, visiting, mowing, bathing, walking or running, gardening, building, sitting, using the computer or cell phone, flying, swimming, dancing, exercising, traveling. The list is endless! The three most dangerous places we are or things we do each day, without giving it much thought, are 1) home; 2) driving; and 3) work. Please note the order, with work being last. Safety is not a part-time job, it is 24/7/365 job, every year, for life. The most important thing we all have is our life. What is your life worth to you, in dollars? Is it priceless? If that is true, then why do we sometimes fail to think safety and prevention to protect the most precious thing we all have, our lives?
