Reflections of an ASSE Fellow

Dr. Milton Rhodes ASSE Fellow 1994 When one is young, there is always the necessity to plan ahead as one's career develops. When one is older, however, there is the luxury of looking back and assessing what has taken place as one's career developed and unfolded. During World War II, I was a navigation officer with the USAAF Air Transport Command. Safety and health were of paramount importance. After the war, I joined General Electric Co. as a chemical engineer. There, as I wrote instructions for large-scale manufacturing, safety and health and the protection of the environment were of major importance. Later, I had the assignment of designing a landfill operation; again, safety and health and protection of the environment were important considerations. My last assignment with GE's largest department in 1971, after the passage of EPA and OSHA in 1970, was EHS manager, one of the first in GE and the U.S. Over the next 12 years, many awards were given for reduction in lost-time accidents. Once again, employee health and the protection of the environment were paramount in this assignment.
