Lab Management: A Capabilities-Based Approach

This article presents only an approach, not a plan. Implementation should be tailored to the specific type of work being performed, the unique hazards present in a given lab capability, as well as the skill, education and experience of its personnel. A strategy for managing work requires that personnel understand the lab's certified capabilities and safety manual. In addition, implementing such as system may carry significant up-front costs. Consequently, it may not be appropriate for all types of labs. However, where this approach can be implemented in an intelligent manner, it may hold major organizational and safety advantages. It provides a comprehensive approach to manage lab operations based on sound principles: define working correctly as working safely; manage work as capabilities; and assess hazards up front on the capabilities.
