After years of intensive development work and customer cooperation, Metso Paper has developed their new OptiSpray coating technology for the market The OptiSpray coating process is based on the controlled, non-contact high-pressure spray application of coating or surface size directly onto the surface of paper or board. OptiSpray achieves excellent coverage of the base paper. The spray-coating station is ideal for flexible installation in a papermaking machine. The process will significantly lower running costs. Greater quantities of cheaper mechanical pulp or recycled pulp, for example, can be used as the raw material as the process allows for machine directional paper strength. The new technology can be used for high speed coating. In tests conducted at the Technology Center in Jaervenpaeae, Finland, paper webs were coated at a speed of up to 2500m/min, the web reaching a phenomenal speed of 150 km/h! The world's fastest production machines, supplied by Metso Paper, currently achieve production speeds of just above 1700m/min (over 100km/h).
