Financial problems halt ferry service across Lake Ontario

Anew high-speed ferry operating across Lake Ontario suspended operations on Sept. 7 and was seized three weeks later for nonpayment of fuel bills. Spirit of Ontario I, which began operating in mid-June, was expected to offer year-round service between Rochester, N.Y., and Toronto. But the ferry was forced to cease operations in late summer because of a variety of financial issues that included higher than expected pilotage costs and customs duties, as well as less than anticipated revenue from truck traffic.
