A U.S. Coast Guard seaman apprentice has pleaded guilty to radioing a mayday hoax in December 2003 in which he pretended to be two fishing vessels in need of rescue. He was sentenced to five months in the Naval Consolidated Brig at Mira-mar, Calif, after which he is to be discharged from the Coast Guard. "I was disappointed to hear that a Coast Guard member perpetrated this act," said Capt. John A Schott, chief of operations, 17th Coast Guard District, adding, "I am glad to see the Coast Guard is taking decisive action on this case."
