On Saturday April 24, 2004, Damage Control-man 3rd Class Nathan Bruckenthal, of Long Island, N.Y., became the first U.S. Coast Guardsman killed in the war on terrorism and the Coast Guards first combat fatality since the Vietnam War. Injured was Boatswains Mate 3rd Class Joseph T. Ruggiero, 23, of Massachusetts, who has since been awarded the Purple Heart and has re-enlisted. The two men of Tactical Law Enforcement Team South, based in Miami, were part of coalition forces in the Persian Gulf protecting the Khawr Al Amaya oil terminal. As three dhows approached, the joint Coast Guard-Navy force challenged and began boarding. Then the dhows exploded. The oil terminal was saved, but at a cost. There are some things to be considered in light of this incident. We are reminded that there are brave sailors about us. We are reminded that unglamorous security work has never been more critical. We are also reminded how terrorists have attacked and will attack again.
