Freedom of speech is a highly valued right of citizenship in the UK, and it is exercised heavily in social media. Yet social media can enter tricky territory when comments become personal. So much so that the legal authorities are now checking to see whether the law provides the necessary safeguards and, if not, how the law might be changed. CMI's Professional Standards Committee (PSC) is discussing how these developments may affect members. This is a preemptive move in the expectation that complaints relating to members' perceived misuse of social media channels may increase. Abuse of social media may he seen as representing a breach of CMI's Code of Practice. CMI draws the line at unacceptable behaviour.
