PETER DRUCKER ONCE SAID that "so much of what we call management consists in making it difficult for people to work". Any discussion about the future of management and leadership benefits from bearing this thought in mind at the outset. Indeed, some humility is due. Getting out of the way of capable people might be the best first step any boss could take. Thankfully, another, less likely management guru is also worth remembering: Lance Corporal Jones from the BBC TV sitcom Dad's Army. Although he did not always follow his own advice, running around in a state of some agitation, his familiar instruction of "Don't panic!" is helpful. Just because the rest of the world is going crazy does not mean that you have to as well.
