Personal development through further and higher education is crucial if individuals are to be able to navigate the workplaces and portfolio careers of the future. All employment sectors are adopting new technologies and transforming their systems, practices and, potentially, entire business models. This is creating tensions in the workforce as the need to be up to date and adaptable clashes with the desire to hold on to ways of working that have served businesses well in the past. Technical, professional and academic qualifications can play an important part in resolving some of that tension - particularly where the learning is designed in conjunction with those at the cutting edge of new developments.
