For major organisations such as ITN and the BBC, the advent of new media applications has increased the pressure to maintain fast-breaking services and taken news into the commercial environment. News is already a key sector for online traffic, with sites such as CNN.com and BBC News Online having been around for more than five years. The imminence of WAP-enabled phones and other mobile devices such as palmpilots, watches, and e-papers, means opportunities for personalised news-on-demand, and therefore for new revenue streams.
