The camera never lies. Even in the days of Photoshop and CGI, this phrase bizarrely survives in common usage. To my knowledge there was never the saying "The tape recorder never lies". Not that there should have been: ever since the appearance of magnetic tape, it has been possible to edit and rearrange speech and music. This naturally invites a completely different impression to be created, depending on motive and scruples. The eyes are not perfect receivers and the brain consequently carries out a huge amount of adjustment. This enables us to make allowances for something that does not look quite right. Master craftsman that he was, Alfred Hitchcock had an alarming fondness for back-projection. It is a testament to his skill that audiences accepted some of the dodgier moments because of the magnificence of everything else.
