If 2000 belonged to the world of online, with a surge in web access and streaming media applications, then 2001 must surely belong to interactive television (i-TV). While a number of i-tv services look set to debut, it has been a long time coming. The lack of interoperability between the digital platforms and non-compatible set-top box technologies have undoubtedly contributed to the delayed roll-out of interactive services in the UK. Digital satellite, cable and terrestrial all require differing and costly middleware solutions, something that was overlooked when broadcasters initially started planning for interactivity.
