Cu Urges Action On Cpsc Reform

Consumers Union (CU) is pointing to the number of recalls in the first part of 2008 to urge Congress to pass a final CPSC reauthorization bill. Both houses passed such bills and are meeting to reconcile the two. "It is essential that they combine the best consumer protection provision in each bill," wrote the group when issuing its recent report, Still Not Safe: New Recalls Underline Need for Strong Hazardous Product Legislation. The report views 121 recalls in January to April 2008, finding more than half, 67, involved children's products. It pointed to China as the primary source. Data supplied to PSL by CPSC show 137 recalls in January to March (PSL, 4/7/08, p. 1).
